Ratargul Swamp Forest is the only freshwater water forest and wildlife sanctuary in Bangladesh. This long area is located at Gowainghat in Sylhet.

This evergreen forest is located on the banks of the Goain River. During the monsoon season, the forest is submerged under 20-30 feet of water. The rest of the year, the water level is about 10 feet.

How to go Ratargul?

To go to Ratargul, first you have to go from Dhaka to Sylhet. Sylhet-bound buses leave from Gabtoli, Fakirapul and Sayedabad bus terminals.

Tickets for AC buses of Green Line, Saudia, S Alam, Shyamli, ENA etc. cost 1000 taka to 1200 taka per person. And the ticket price for non-AC bus is 480 to 600 taka per person.

If you want you can go to Sylhet by train. From Kamalapur or Airport Railway Station, Upban, Jayantika, Parabat or Kalni Express departs for Sylhet.

Besides, if you have a good budget, you can fly from Dhaka to Sylhet in a very short time. The cost will increase even if your time for it is reduced.

How to go from Sylhet?

There are three ways you can reach Ratargul from Sylhet. You can use whichever path is easier for you. Below are the details of the three paths.

First way

Reaching sharighat directly from Sylhet via Sarighat on Jaflong-Tamabil Road. Then you have to rent a trawler from Gowainghat to Ratargul bit office.

Rent between 900 – 1500 taka (round trip takes two hours. You have to go down to the bit office and enter the forest by dinghy boat. It will take 200-300 taka per hour.

Second way

To reach Goainghat by CNG from Amberkhana point in Sylhet, the fare will be 500 taka. Osmani Airport-Shalutikar road is very beautiful in the rainy season.

Then you have to hire a trawler from Gowainghat to Ratargul bit office. Rent between 800 – 1500 taka (round trip). It takes two hours.

You have to go down to the bit office and enter the forest by dinghy boat. The boatman will take 200-300 taka per hour.

Third way

From Ratargul-Sylhet Amberkhana point you have to take CNG to reach Motorghat (via Saheb Bazar).

The rent will be 200-300 taka and it will take an hour. Then you can take a dinghy boat directly from the motor ghat to the forest.

It will cost 200-300 taka per hour. This third way is the least time and cost.

It is important to remember that no matter which way Ratargul comes from, fishermen will have to rent small boats to enter the forest. A boat can seat a maximum of 4-5 people.

Where to stay

If you want to go to Ratargul, you have to stay in a hotel in Sylhet city or its vicinity. However, you can rent any hotel with low rent or high rent if you want.
